Growing up on one of the biggest and poorest council estates in the world is an experience I will never forget for both the good and bad reasons. It made me what I am today, determined, innovative and downright entrepreneurial. My name is Lee Williams and I come from Merthyr Tydfil. I currently study a foundation degree at the University of South Wales within Merthyr Tydfil College and I am the founder and owner of Maid In Wales, a creative cleaning company for all of your unusual cleaning needs.
It all started when I was speaking to a friend who claimed that I was “wasted” as all I did was answer phones for the tax office. This hit home and the next day I walked up to my manager of 2 years and handed in my resignation announcing that I would not be returning to work from six o’clock that evening, and it was the best thing I have ever done. I left my stunning apartment in Cardiff Bay and moved back home to live with my mum to start again. I applied for University for the 3rd time and found myself a part time job to tide myself over.
Always wanting my own business, I met Christine Bissex the Entrepreneurship champion for Merthyr Tydfil College, and after many discussions with her, Maid In Wales was born. I built on this business idea and applied for the Big Ideas Wales Challenge where my life suddenly changed again, I met numerous contacts and friends and was given access to the biggest business start-up network possible.
Everything that has happened to me over the last few years has led to where I am today, from being mugged with a chisel in my side for my bike, being the first ever pupil at my school to have the title of head boy removed, winning the Young Entrepreneur award at the 2014 Merthyr Business Awards and being awarded funding of £5000.00 by an organisation for Maid In Wales. Every story I have is because of another story and they all have highs and lows.
It doesn’t matter where you are from or what your background is, if you want something that much, you will find a way to it, just like I did. All you have to do is learn what they don’t teach you at school.
