Pontypridd-based carpentry firm Hazelwood Carpentry has been in business for 5 years and has an impressive portfolio of contracts and clients throughout Wales and England. They contacted Business Wales earlier this year for assistance and received tailored 1:2:1 support through the Construction Futures Wales programme. Managing Director Martin Jenkins tells us why his growing company needed specialist assistance:
“We had already achieved many certifications and memberships to relevant professional bodies, but we wanted a Standard that proved to our clients our commitment to excellence and the ISO standards were the ideal way of demonstrating this.
We were determined to achieve the UKAS accredited standard ISO9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS18001, and after attending a Business Wales event, learnt more about the commitment we would need to make.
We wanted to introduce an integrated Management System, as this would work best for our business, and turned to Business Wales to provide advice regarding our existing environmental policies. They assisted us and then recommended we speak to Construction Futures Wales (CFW) for help with the IMS (Integrated Management System).
We have received consultancy through CFW that has enabled us to put together a robust Integrated Management System. We now also have trained internal auditors to ensure we can continue with implementing the system and making any necessary changes to the business to ensure we remain at the top of our game, and can demonstrate exactly why we should be the carpentry contractor of choice for our main contractors.
The whole process has been an excellent way of ensuring we are conforming to all relevant legislation, and are operating in an efficient and cost effective manner. It has enabled us to look subjectively at our business and put additional processes in place where necessary to ensure we can continue to grow and maintain the high standards that we currently have.
The assistance we have received from Business Wales and Construction Futures Wales has been beneficial throughout the process so far. Knowing that there is an industry specialist to approach who has a genuine interest in us achieving success as a business has been invaluable to us.
We are now operating according to our new Integrated Management System, and are working towards our first UKAS external audit.”
