Skills and Academia

The area benefits from World-class industry led commercial research that is linked to Swansea University’s Bay Campus, University of Wales and other academic organisations, which act as a catalyst to attract further investments and other forms of funding.

This aids the developing new, advanced manufacturing materials and techniques, through innovation, research and collaboration between industry and academia, supported by the Welsh Government and local authority.

The existing links to academia include:

  • Swansea University’s Bay Campus which focuses on science and innovation and is one of the biggest knowledge economy projects in Europe.
  • The Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre at Swansea University is conducting world leading research in structural materials, to improve the efficiency and environmental sustainability of gas turbine engines.
  • SPECIFIC Innovation and Knowledge Centre is formed of four strategic partners – Swansea University, Tata Steel, BASF and NSG Pilkington glass – and aims to transform buildings into power stations by enabling them to generate, store and release their own solar energy. It also welcomes other R&D projects.
  • TWI Technology Centre (Wales) is a world class engineering and research centre which specialises in the development and application of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and provides a unique facility for structural testing and evaluation.
  • Hydrogen Research Centre is located at Baglan Energy Park and is a focal point of new R&D for renewable hydrogen production and novel hydrogen energy storage, including hydrogen vehicles, fuel cell applications and overall hydrogen energy systems.  


Port Talbot has long established strengths in manufacturing and steel production. This is combined with a firm focus on continuing to develop cutting edge, world class industries in sectors such as Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, Construction and Green Energy.

Port Talbot Waterway Enterprise Zone’s unique combination of factors, in terms of location, infrastructure and its connectivity to the knowledge economy has attracted some of the UK’s top manufacturers.

Manufacturers in the area include TATA Steel, BOC, SPECIFIC, TWI and ThyssenKrupp who, along with a host of other highly technically competent companies, make a strong foundation for the creation of a dynamic and innovative cluster of businesses.

TATA Steel

Tata Steel is the largest employer in Port Talbot and second largest steel producer in Europe. The company provides cold rolled, hot rolled and hot dip coated steel to worldwide markets, including the construction, automotive engineering and packaging sectors.


BOC is the UK’s largest provider of gas, services and related equipment for the industrial and medical market. The company has been producing atmospheric gases, such as argon, nitrogen and oxygen for over 120 years.  BOC is a member of The Linde Group, which has 50,000 employees working in around 100 countries worldwide.


The Sustainable Product Engineering Centre for Innovative Functional Industrial Coatings (SPECIFIC) is led by Swansea University in partnership with Tata Steel. This £20m, 5-year project has state of the art research labs at Baglan Bay Energy Park  where coated glass and steel products are being developed, that can be used in construction and will store, generate and release energy.


TWI is seen as one of the world’s leading independent research and technology organisations. TWI has expertise in industrial engineering processes and specialises in problem solving, the transfer of knowledge and innovation across all aspects of manufacturing.


ThyssenKrupp is a project management and professional engineering consultancy company who assist companies with oil, gas and power development projects.  ThyssenKrupp’s client base includes blue-chip international companies, independent businesses and national oil companies. 

Quality of life

Situated on the eastern edge of Swansea Bay, Port Talbot is world famous for its industrial heritage and the stunning coast and countryside that surrounds it. 

To the west of Port Talbot lies the Gower Peninsula, which was the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, while to the north are the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons National Park.

The area boasts the seaside at Aberavon Beach, world class mountain biking at Afan Forest Park and Waterfall Country right on its doorstep. The heritage of the area is exemplified with, amongst other things, monastic abbeys (at Margam and Neath), Roman roads, canals, country parks and colliery museums.

With such stunning history and geography, whilst being conveniently located along the M4, it is easy to see why the area is so appealing for television and film companies. One of Europe’s largest indoor film studios is close by and the area has been used as a location for television programmes such as Doctor Who, Torchwood and Merlin, and filming of the Dark Knight, Harry Potter and Da Vinci’s Demons.

Port Talbot offers affordable, vibrant living with a mix of new housing and community facilities. This includes the recent construction of over 250 waterfront apartments and townhouses, In addition, the Council has recently opened its new £13m Leisure Centre. Over £30m of investment is currently being utilised to transform the town centre, improve and create homes and provide cultural and employability centres.

Swansea, Wales’ second city, is only 15 minutes away, and boasts further leisure and cultural facilities. The Welsh Capital of Cardiff lies 45 minutes from Port Talbot and provides excellent shopping, from charming Edwardian and Victorian arcades to ultra-modern shopping centres. The city is also renowned as a sports and culture destination, with world class venues such as the Millennium Stadium and the Wales Millennium Centre.
