Supporting Technological Capability and Productivity Development in Wales – Gateway to UK’s National Scientific Infrastructure

The UK’s national laboratories (NPL, NML@LGC, NEL and the STFC)* are coming together to offer the most technologically advanced capability, expertise and facilities available in the UK in an unprecedented single point of access regional approach, the “Innovation Wales Portal”. This collaboration will provide companies with increased opportunities to leverage the UK government’s multi-billion pound investment in these advanced facilities to support the UK economy and help accelerate innovation. The Innovation Wales Portal will support companies in navigating the often complex landscape and connecting rapidly with the appropriate resource in a streamlined manner. Innovation Wales Portal will simplify and ‘level’ the ground bringing together these national assets into a single point of enquiry where companies can easily engage with any part of these national assets and gain rapid and relevant technical advice.

The types of support available could range from assistance with new product development, support to optimise a process or product, through to overcoming seemingly intractable production issues. The enquiries should be challenge or problem-led allowing the experts to bring their experience to bear in designing innovative solutions. A panel of specialists from each of these organisations will examine and direct enquiries to the appropriate expert or capability within the broader group or to signpost the next steps if an existing or complementary approach would be more suitable. Innovation Wales Portal will work closely with the Innovate UK and KTN network and academia to ensure effective engagement with the wider UK research network and funding landscape.  There is no fee for the use of this portal; the advice and any signposting is free but Innovation Wales Portal is not in a position to directly fund projects or offer bid writing services.

The initiative aims to maximise engagement with SMEs, lowering barriers and providing effective and timely advice in directing technical enquiries to a suitable innovation partner whether that is within a local university or in a large-scale national laboratory. It will bring together a broad range of partners, skills and expertise providing all parties involved the opportunity to engage effectively and help springboard the UK economy.
