Gain an edge

Whether you’re striving to be a rock star or a successful entrepreneur, there are likely to be other people trying to take a similar route to success. These people are your rivals as they are in competition with you for the attention of your audience. As a result, their level of appeal will directly affect how quickly and successfully you realise your vision.

However, you can steal a march over your rivals by thinking carefully how you can stand out from the crowd. Shining more brightly will help you to gain a competitive edge as you’ll be more visible to your audience and draw more people to you.

This is all about daring to be different, and, of course, it comes with a risk. You could play it safe and stick to what you know works, but by doing so you may never reach the heights you crave. But if you decide to plough your own furrow, there is always the chance you could alienate the people you want to attract.

This chapter explains why it’s important to be innovative and strive for a key point of difference to gain an edge. It also sets out the way you can achieve this with the minimum amount of risk and develop a mindset that is constantly switched on to new ideas.

"It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all." - Edward de Bono
