Helo Blod fills the Welsh language gap for candle company

Purah Beeswax Candles based in Llannon, Carmarthenshire, has been using Helo Blod a free, fast and friendly Welsh translation and advice service that helps businesses use more Welsh.

The sustainable candle company, Purah Beeswax Candles, has used the free service to make the Welsh language more visible in their business and has already seen the benefits of using the Welsh language.

Helen Louise Williams, the owner of Purah Beeswax Candles, currently sells her candles online and has over 20 stockists across Wales. Helen wanted to add more Welsh to her business to connect to her customers and help her business grow. Set up over two years ago Purah Candles uses local, natural, sustainable materials where possible and the beeswax used in their candles comes from a combination of British beeswax and the beeswax from their own bees.

Helen said: “I decided to use Welsh in my business for two reasons really. Firstly, it reflects who I am. I was born and raised in Wales, I’ve set up a business in Wales. Secondly, 70% of my customers are based in Wales, and I think it’s only right that I use the language of the country that I sell to.

“So far, I’ve used Helo Blod to translate my profile on social media, and for the descriptions of my products online. In the future, I am hoping to use the service to make Welsh more visible across all my business, particularly on my packaging.”

Small and medium-sized businesses can use the service to get translations of up to 500 words per month, free of charge. Helo Blod can help with translating menus, business cards, signage, and anything else businesses might want. If businesses are already using Welsh, Helo Blod can text check up to 1,000 words each year for free.

Helen Louise Williams continued: “I think using Welsh really helps bring communities together. I speak Welsh but at a very basic level, and I don’t think it’s really good enough to use in my business. Helo Blod fills that gap for me, and does all my translation.”

Helo Blod can also send out useful resources like lanyards and badges that let customers know who can speak or is learning Welsh.

Helo Blod service is part of the Welsh Government’s wider goal of doubling the daily use of the Welsh language by 2050. Helo Blod encourages all business owners to add just a little bit of Welsh to their business in a way that is best suits them.

Minister for Welsh Language, Eluned Morgan said, “Using just a little bit of Welsh can make a big difference to your business. Our goal is to see more Welsh in places that we go to every day, from your local shop to the bakery or hair salon.

“Helo Blod is here to help you find your voice and make the language more visible in your business. Just get in touch with Helo Blod and join the hundreds of people who have already benefited from this free service.”
