The Welsh Government is seeking to create long term opportunities for Welsh businesses to access and exploit new high growth and emerging markets around the world.
As part of this, key relationships are being forged between Wales and Mexico – in particular the state of Jalisco (of which Guadalajara is capital) - to develop innovation, trade and knowledge transfer partnerships between the two nations. 2015 will be the “Year of UK in Mexico” and the “Year of Mexico in the UK”. Several events have been planned aimed at doubling the trade between the two countries.
Mexico is one of the worlds fastest growing economies, it:
- is currently the world’s 11th largest economy, with a population of over 112 million
- exports 1.5bn USD of audio visual content and more than 5bn USD of creative goods
- has signed a free trade agreement the European Union helping EU goods gain preferential access to Mexico. In 2011 trade between the UK and Mexico was worth US$12.2 billion
- has trade agreements signed with 45 different nations giving it access to a market of over 1 billion consumers who represent 60% of the global GDP
The vibrant culture and extreme hospitality of the Mexican people make Mexico a very attractive and accessible market.
A joint memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Wales and the State of Jalisco is set to be signed early in 2015. The initial focus will be on the creative industries, life sciences and ICT and we are encouraging Welsh businesses in these sectors who would like to explore opportunities to do business with Mexico to contact us.
