Project description

A pilot project to trial new uses for the Giles Gilbert Scott red telephone kiosks that are iconic features within the rural area. Tourist orientation & information points, and life-saving defibrillator cabinets are two proposed uses.

What will the project achieve?

Installation of 5 tourist information points and 1 defibrillator

Red Telephone Box

Who are the project beneficiaries?

The communities taking part in the project

Biggest challenges and / or lesson learnt during the project?

Challenge to obtain a consensus amongst communities sometimes over what they want in the kiosks and that some communities do need a lot of hand holding on pilot projects. The amount of officer time that has been spent on each community has been far more than for other pilot projects. Also that working on this project has been a much slower process as there are many other problems that need to be sorted first e.g. the communities need to sign the adoption lease from BT, some kiosks are listed and therefore need listed consent for the work to take place, community councils only meet on a monthly basis so decisions can be slow and some kiosks need a lot of work to bring them back up to a good condition first before they can take part in the project (e.g. new door or hinges or panes of glass).

What’s next for your project?

Due to demand in Denbighshire, we have extended the project for two more kiosks to take part. All of the completed kiosk locations will be advertised through Cadwyn Clwyd’s website. Contact will be made to cycling groups and publications to highlight the presence of the cycling repair stations in the kiosks within North East Wales.
