Project summary:

The Adlerian Society of Wales is a charity that provides training in Adlerian counselling and private counselling sessions from their centre in Narberth.

In 2016 they recognised an increasing need to offer community support to those who couldn’t afford to pay for counselling, nor access the centre, so they applied for LEADER funding to pilot an outreach service that would be accessible to those in greatest need. They wanted to provide wellness and recovery resources for the whole community, which would encourage individuals to find their own solutions and manage the distresses of ordinary life.

What happened:

The LEADER support enabled The Adlerian Society to design a course curriculum, pilot and refine it and get the mobile wellbeing college off the ground. During the pilot they ran accessible wellbeing courses in six towns around the county and established four area hubs.

The courses were open entry with a mixture of participants of different experiences, abilities and knowledge. Each group was facilitated in such a way as to equalise everyone, including the tutors, as human beings who all face life challenges.

Outcomes:

Thanks to LEADER funding, the Adlerian Centre now has an outreach wellbeing service they continue to offer. This is a fully costed package that includes the costs of two tutors, room hire, insurance, printed materials and refreshments.

Since the centre wanted people to continue to access wellbeing courses free of charge, they reviewed and changed their training delivery model, with the aim of generating sufficient surplus funds to subsidise the learning hub, whilst continuing to apply for funding.

This meant revising and rebranding their entry level counselling course and also changing the delivery model for their BACP-accredited certificate and diploma courses in Adlerian Counselling. These changes are expected to bring in more funds from student course fees that can be put into the mobile wellbeing learning hub and continue to support those who are most in need.

Lessons Learned:

The Trustees found that the success of the LEADER pilot forced them to completely revise their delivery model for their introductory level and accredited Adlerian Counselling courses, incorporating residential weekend sessions and online seminars, which in turn helps them to extend their reach to a wider pool of counselling students.
