The Welsh Government has commissioned Alma Economics to conduct research on what decarbonisation initiatives are currently being undertaken by small retailers, or by large retailers that can potentially be implemented by small retailers, in Wales.
For instance, initiatives such as stores accepting unwanted jeans for recycling, installing energy-efficient refrigeration systems, or reducing delivery emissions would all be relevant examples.
The outputs from the work will inform and support policy work to promote decarbonisation initiatives that could be feasible among smaller retailers.
The survey is open to all retailers, retail organisations, and trade representatives across Wales.
We are interested in decarbonisation initiatives introduced by retailers both to:
- Reduce their own carbon footprint – e.g. generating their own renewable energy.
- Reduce the carbon footprint of their customers – e.g. offering recycle, reuse and repair schemes.
Your evidence will help us:
- Capture current activities led by retailers.
- Understand the enablers and barriers for implementing these initiatives.
- Strengthen the evidence base to support future Welsh Government policy on decarbonisation in retail.
Completion time: Up to 25 minutes.
Submission deadline: 23:59, 5 December 2025.
