The Start-Up Accelerator is a flagship programme supporting Wales’ most promising entrepreneurs. Over an intensive 12-week course, participants receive expert mentorship, targeted business workshops, and networking opportunities to refine their ideas into scalable businesses.
Gaz Thomas, a seasoned entrepreneur passionate about gaming and digital experiences, was among 2024's participants. His business, Solitaire.io, combines years of expertise in web development and game creation with an ambitious mission: to make solitaire gaming accessible, fun, and free.
We spoke with Gaz to learn more about his journey and the transformative role of the Start-Up Programme.
Can you explain the idea behind Solitaire.io?
Solitaire.io is a simple, user-friendly website offering solitaire games that can be played on mobile or desktop devices. We also sell unique collectable playing cards.
We focus on providing free games with no intrusive ads or in-app purchases, which are common frustrations in the industry. Our physical card decks take this creativity further, bringing a fresh and colourful twist to traditional playing cards.
What challenges did you face before joining the Start-Up Accelerator, and how did you overcome them?
I was an experienced solo entrepreneur but lacked confidence in building a team and scaling a business.
The accelerator helped me develop the skills and confidence to tackle larger projects. It also helped me identify grant funding as the best way to fuel our growth. This led to successful applications for support from M-SParc and Media Cymru, which have been critical in driving our research and development work.
What inspired you to start your business?
Reading an article about internet millionaires inspired me to start building websites. I’ve always enjoyed building products that people love using, whether a free game, a website, or a physical product like our collectable playing cards. Solitaire.io allows me to combine my experience in technology, gaming, and entrepreneurship.
There’s nothing more rewarding than gaining traction, receiving positive feedback, and seeing people connect with what you’ve built. I also love the challenge of problem-solving and turning ideas into reality.
How did the Start-Up Accelerator refine your business idea or strategy?
The mentors and workshops helped me focus on sustainable growth and refine my business strategy. I gained clarity on key revenue streams, target audiences, and how to communicate our value proposition more effectively.The programme also highlighted grant funding as a key growth opportunity.
What skills, knowledge, or tools did you gain during the programme?
The accelerator gave me valuable insights into financial planning, marketing strategies, and leadership skills. These tools have proven essential as I transition from working solo to building and leading a team. Peer-to-peer sessions helped me gain fresh perspectives from entrepreneurs in different industries, which was inspiring and incredibly useful.
What are your future plans for Solitaire.io?
Over the next year, we’re launching our latest collectable card deck, Mosh Idols: Punk Rock Playing Cards. In the long term, our vision is to become the go-to platform for solitaire enthusiasts worldwide. We also plan to expand our physical product line with dozens of new themed playing card decks. We’re constantly innovating and looking for new ways to enhance our games and products.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned as an entrepreneur?
The business landscape changes quickly. Being open to feedback, pivoting when necessary, and continuing to learn are essential for long-term success.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their own business?
Start small, but think big. Validate your ideas early, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes; they can be some of the best learning experiences.
How has being part of the programme influenced your confidence or perspective as a founder?
The programme has been transformative. After years as a solo entrepreneur, it gave me the confidence to scale my business and pursue more ambitious projects. I now have the tools and knowledge to take my business to the next level.
