Howard is an experienced coach, consultant and business leader with a specialism in organisational development and high-growth strategy. A Chartered Fellow of the CIPD, he began his career at NatWest before moving into senior roles at the International Thomson Organisation. There, he launched a publishing venture and later co-founded a business in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects. As an Accelerated Growth Programme (AGP) Relationship Manager, he supports ambitious Welsh companies to scale with confidence.

We asked Howard to share what drives him, what he’s learned, and the advice he offers most often.

What first drew you to working with high-growth businesses?

I’ve seen how high-growth businesses can transform local economies. They create jobs, drive innovation and contribute significantly to Wales’s GDP. Having started and grown my own business, I understand how important it is to have the right support at the right time. High-growth businesses often need to move fast and deal with complex challenges, so access to expert, tailored guidance can make all the difference.

What’s the most rewarding part of being a Relationship Manager?

Working with talented and committed people. I love being able to support founders and leadership teams to refine their plans, seize opportunities and overcome barriers. It’s incredibly rewarding to see their hard work turn into real success, both professionally and personally.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever given or received?

Be true to yourself. Know your values and let them guide your decisions. There will be moments where it feels easier to compromise or take shortcuts in pursuit of financial success, but you have to ask whether those choices align with your principles. Staying grounded in your values is key to long-term success.

What’s one trait you see in the most successful business leaders?

They know they can’t do it all alone. The most effective leaders surround themselves with people who bring different skills and perspectives. They listen, take advice and stay open to learning. That ability to adapt is what helps them respond to change and keep moving forward.

How do you recharge outside of work?

Cycling and running are a big part of my life. In 2023 I joined the Paris to Bordeaux ride with Jonathan (Jiffy) Davies to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre. I enjoyed it so much I took on 350 miles in Florida last year and have signed up for their Spanish ride in May 2026. I also volunteer at my local foodbank, which keeps me grounded and connected to the community.

What’s one thing you’d love every AGP business to know?

AGP is not just here to support growth, but to help businesses navigate challenges too. We can connect you to expert coaches, sector specialists and other Business Wales programmes, including the Welsh Government’s MIT Industrial Liaison Programme. It’s a highly personalised service with access to a powerful network.

What challenges do you most often help clients tackle?

Clarifying purpose, vision and strategy. I help businesses define measurable goals and ensure those goals are shared clearly across teams and stakeholders. Growth without direction can stall quickly. Getting that clarity is essential.

Can you share a moment you’re proud of from your time at AGP?

Helping a client secure and develop a new site for expansion. I introduced key experts and coordinated the project so they could move forward with confidence. It gave them the space and capability they needed to achieve their growth plans.

And finally, what’s your go-to advice for ambitious business owners?

You might be the founder or leader, but you’re still part of a team. Build a strong network of people you trust, even if you’re a solo entrepreneur. Once you’ve set your vision and strategy, share it. Invite feedback and listen closely, especially when the perspective differs from your own.
