PACEY Cymru - Helping people to take their first steps to becoming a childminder

Helping people to take their first steps to becoming a childminder

Kankshi is a recently registered childminder, and a PACEY member. She has received support from her Local Authority, Business Wales and PACEY Cymru throughout her journey to becoming a registered childminder in Wales.

PACEY Cymru were able to provide Kankshi with a good understanding of what a childminder is and what they do through our initial briefing session, and a thorough and well supported training course, both of which helped prepare Kankshi for registration with Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) and becoming a childminder. Kankshi also made use of the pre-registration support forums that PACEY Cymru hold, which allowed her to network with other pre-registration childminders and share information and ideas with them.

Through Local Authority funding, Kankshi was able to access telephone and email support with one of PACEY Cymru’s Childminding Coordinators, Kim Chatterton. Kankshi found this support invaluable, especially when completing her CIW application, and with the difficulties she had in obtaining a medical reference where Kim was able to signpost Kankshi to the Adapted Registration Guidance for applicants and providers in response to COVID-19. Kankshi stated “Kim has been so helpful throughout, any queries I contact her via email and get a reply ASAP…she has been so supportive throughout”. Kim also signposted Kankshi to Business Wales, where she was able to access a small grant towards safety in her setting.

Once registered Kankshi was excited to start childminding. She subscribed to PACEY membership and purchased the PACEY Toolkit in order to support her new business and ensure she was able to keep up to date with government guidance and changes in legislation. Kankshi’s PACEY membership has meant she is able to access a wealth of information, CPD, legal and business support and access to one to one peer support from childcare specialists. She was also very impressed with the contents of the toolkit. In particular, she felt the contracts were comprehensive and user friendly.

Kankshi has found her PACEY membership gives her access to some great resources and support and that the PACEY website is an invaluable tool during the registration process and beyond. PACEY Cymru work hard to ensure it has the most up to date information and where needed, it is Wales specific.
