Label manufacturer is one step closer to greener goal thanks to Business Wales

Nathan Williams

A Wrexham-based label manufacturing company has successfully made strides towards a net zero future and upscaled its business processes thanks to guidance from Business Wales.

Established in 1992, Limpet Labels UK is a privately-owned family business that provides self-adhesive label services to the UK’s leading SMEs and brands including Halfords, WD-40, Wrexham Lager and Booker Wholesale.

Although equipped with an impressive clientele and annual turnover of around £4 million, Operations Manager Nathan Williams reached out to Business Wales for business development support. After years of continuous investment and innovation, Nathan wanted Limpet Labels UK to operate more efficiently and receive advice on how the company can move closer to hitting its greener goals.

The company’s Business Wales Relationship Manager Richard Fraser-Williams arranged a joint meeting with a Welsh government Innovation Specialist, who introduced SFIS. This joint approach led Nathan to Welsh Government’s SMART Flexible Innovation Support , which provides advice, expertise and finance to businesses. This advice prompted Nathan to invest in a new management information system to help the business achieve faster growth and lower waste overall to help reach its sustainability goal of achieving net zero.

Business Wales also introduced Nathan to Claire Hinchcliffe at Wrexham Council. Claire found that, despite being based on one of biggest industrial estates in Wrexham, many local companies on the same estate weren’t aware of the manufacturer and sourced their labels from Europe. Since this realisation, Limpet Labels UK has explored new ways of developing its marketing strategy to target customers on their doorstep.

Operations Manager, Nathan said:

Limpet Labels UK has been around for over 32 years and although we have an extensive portfolio of high-profile clients, we wanted to ensure that we were on a path to progression and continuing to improve our practices by reducing waste and producing labels from recyclable materials. The contacts that we’ve made within the Welsh Government and our local council through Business Wales have helped us make ourselves known to our neighbours and show them that we are proud to provide a quality service to small and large businesses alike.

The self-adhesive label manufacturer is now exploring possibilities of purchasing new, sustainable equipment, with support from Business Wales.

Nathan continued:

Limpet Labels UK is a trusted company with a loyal customer base, but we have now been able to discover new ways that we could improve our production processes. Business Wales has helped us to design new development plans that can help us to strengthen our current relationships, expand our clientele and become a greener label manufacturer.

Richard Fraser-Williams said:

Nathan is leading Limpet Labels’ drive for continuous improvement, adapting new technology, and reducing its carbon footprint. His willingness to explore all opportunities and considering professional input will, no doubt, foster healthy growth and accomplish his team’s objective of becoming a greener business.
