Kaydiar, based in Swansea, is a pioneering medical device company specialising in adaptive offloading technologies to combat pressure-induced wounds, lesions, and musculoskeletal injuries. With support from the Business Wales Accelerated Growth Programme (BWAGP), the company has secured critical funding, refined its market strategies, and developed key partnerships, including with an FTSE 100 company.

Founded by podiatrists David Barton and Heather Smart, Kaydiar began as a university project to treat diabetic foot ulcers. Today, it leads the healthcare sector with its innovative brands: DiaSole, ZeroSole, and PROmorph. Its flagship product, ZeroSole, is available through major UK retailers like Boots and Amazon and is expanding into European markets. Backed by Welsh Government grants, Innovate UK funding, and university collaborations, Kaydiar delivers cost-effective, preventative solutions for treating and preventing costly pressure-induced wounds.

Co-founder David Barton shares the inspiration behind the business and how BWAGP support has empowered Kaydiar to make a global impact in wound care.

What inspired the launch of Kaydiar?
My journey began at Cardiff Metropolitan University, where I developed an offloading orthotic device for diabetic foot ulcers. This condition costs the NHS over £1 billion annually, highlighting the pressing need for innovative solutions. This was the driving force behind Kaydiar. With Heather's extensive NHS experience in wound care and lower-limb biomechanics, we set out to create effective, preventative products that improve patient outcomes while alleviating financial pressures on healthcare systems.

Kaydiar’s mission is to become the go-to company for anti-pressure technology, addressing the treatment and prevention of pressure-induced wounds. With continued innovation, strategic partnerships, and the support of BWAGP, we are poised to revolutionise wound care worldwide.

How has the Business Wales Accelerated Growth Programme supported Kaydiar's growth?
The BWAGP has been a cornerstone of our success, offering a diverse range of support services tailored to our unique challenges. Their guidance has been indispensable, from commercial negotiation and marketing strategies to branding and legal advice. BWAGP has connected us with investors, facilitated collaborative opportunities, and helped us navigate the complexities of entering the over-the-counter (OTC) and medical device markets.

This support has been instrumental in securing funding, streamlining our operations, and launching ZeroSole. Their expertise continues to drive our expansion and strengthen our resilience.

What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
COVID-19 disrupted clinical trials for DiaSole, and Brexit introduced significant export challenges. However, BWAGP’s guidance has allowed us to adapt. By leveraging government grants, university collaborations, and our investor network, we’ve overcome these hurdles and continue to innovate for the future.

What are your proudest achievements?
Kaydiar's defining moments were Securing Innovate UK Smart funding and completing a major funding round. These milestones validated our vision and provided the necessary resources to accelerate R&D and scale production. We're also incredibly proud of the achievements of Launching ZeroSole into the UK market and gaining recognition from industry leaders.

What makes your products unique?
Our solutions are built on adaptability, innovation, and prevention. ZeroSole, for example, is a modular silicone insole that can be reconfigured throughout the healing process. It fits into everyday footwear and is machine washable for improved hygiene. These features make it cost-effective, easy to use, and highly effective at preventing and treating pressure wounds.
