In January 2024, Tata Steel announced proposals to close both blast furnaces at Port Talbot as part of their decarbonisation plans. This restructuring of operations could result in significant job losses on site and within the wider supply chain and have a substantial impact on the local economy and across South Wales and beyond.
Neath Port Talbot Council is working on plans to support workers and supply chain businesses affected by these changes, to protect and grow the local economic base to ensure a continuous pipeline of high quality employment opportunities into the future.
As part of this work, the Council is working with neighbouring authorities and partner organisations to understand the different types of roles and the skillsets required by businesses to support current and future employment needs.
This questionnaire therefore, is an information gathering exercise to assist with this process. It will help us identify the needs of local businesses, assess the extent to which the local labour market can absorb workers affected by the Tata transition plans and understand what training or reskilling programmes are required to support employment now and in the future.
We would be grateful for your views on whether there may be opportunities for your business to benefit from the additional supply of workers that will be entering the labour market. Also we need information on what types of jobs and skill level are needed, including professional and management, technical and manual roles.
