Disability History Month 2024 – Evan’s Story

Evan Coleman

Throughout Disability History Month we want to raise awareness about the benefits of employing disabled people and highlight the support and resources available to employers.

Evan Coleman Pharmacy Assistant at Cwm Taff Morgannwg Health Board:

Evan enrolled onto a Supported Internship Programme at Prince Charles Hospital in September 2022, supported by ELITE Supported Employment Agency and Merthyr College. Throughout the academic year, Evan carried out several placements, gaining varied work experiences. Evan showcased valuable skills that are essential for working in a hospital environment, which highlighted his potential, charming personality and suitability for working in this field.

On completion of the Supported Internship, Evan successfully secured employment within the Pharmacy Department. This achievement followed an adapted interview process, tailored to meet his support needs and ensuring a fair and supportive evaluation of his capabilities. Evan’s new role is a testament to his hard work, adaptability, and the valuable skills, he demonstrated during his internship.

With ELITE Supported Employment’s support, Evan’s role has been thoughtfully designed to enhance his strengths, providing advantages for him and his employer. Through matching his responsibilities with his skills and the company's objectives, Evan can make meaningful contributions with confidence. This strategy has not only boosted productivity, but also cultivates a positive workplace atmosphere.

Upon commencement of employment, Evan was provided with a 1-2-1 Job Coach, who delivered Training in Systematic Instruction, in line with the High Fidelity Supported Employment Model.  This involved providing intensive, individualised support to help Evan with his barriers to employment and enabled him to succeed, in the workplace.

The Job Coach continues to provide targeted support for both Evan and his employer, to create an inclusive environment, with tailored training packages for new tasks and to offer continuous feedback and encouragement.

Evan’s journey through the Supported Internship Programme and subsequent employment within the Pharmacy Department, highlights the effectiveness of tailored support and job coaching. Through focusing on Evan’s strengths and providing a flexible, supportive work environment, both Evan and his employer have benefited significantly.
