Diversity on Public Boards and in Public Appointments

Funded by the Welsh Government this project has been developed with the aim of increasing representation on Public Boards and Committees.

Two programmes will specifically support people from a minority ethnic background or people with a disability, who are interested in obtaining a public appointment:

  • Near Ready’ Leadership programme: For people from a minority ethnic background or people with a disability, who already have some leadership experience (e.g. a school governor) and would like to become a board member on a public body in Wales.
  • Public Leaders of the Future programme: For people from a minority ethnic background or people with a disability who are interested in obtaining a public appointment but who do not yet have the necessary skills and experience to apply. The training will provide participants with the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills needed to move towards obtaining a board position on a public body.

There are also two programmes providing introduction and diversity and inclusion training for Board members and those involved in public appointment recruitment campaigns:

  • Board Member Introduction training: For new board members of non-health bodies. The training will equip new appointees to the boards of regulated public bodies in Wales with the key information needed to carry out their role.
  • Diversity and Inclusion training: For Chairs and board members of public bodies in Wales. The training will provide delegates with an understanding of – equalities legislation, the Social Model of Disability, reasonable adjustments, systemic/institutional racism and racial inequality.
