Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF): competition winners

CO2

The IETF provides grant funding for feasibility and engineering studies, and for the deployment of industrial energy efficiency and deep decarbonisation projects.

From beer brewing to baked beans, dairy farms and cement, 25 businesses across Wales, Northern Ireland and England have received nearly £52 million to reduce their carbon emissions to boost the UK’s mission as part of the Plan for Change to become a clean energy superpower and accelerate to net zero, supporting jobs and economic growth.

The two Welsh winners comprise £7.6 million out of a total of £51.9 million in the IETF funding and £20.4 million of the £154million total project costs being announced:

  • Hanson Cement in North Wales will use its £5.6 million grant to support its multi-million-pound carbon capture and storage project – creating hundreds of jobs during construction and capturing 800,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year once operational – the equivalent of taking 320,000 cars off the road.
  • Envirowales Limited in Blaenau Gwent recycles 70,000 tonnes of lead-acid batteries per annum at its Ebbw Vale facility. As one of Europe’s newest plants, with a recycling efficiency exceeding 95% and strict environmental compliance, the business focuses on ‘best in class’ performance with an emphasis on continuous improvement. The purpose of the project is to objectively improve the operational efficiency of the pyrometallurgical process. Improved furnaces, furnace control systems and ventilation will reduce usage of coal, natural gas, oxygen and reagents, and minimise waste products including CO2 and by-products to landfill.
