International Day of Older People 2025

Mature office worker

Each year on 1 October, people across the world mark United Nations International Day of Older People to raise awareness of opportunities and challenges faced by ageing populations, and to mobilise the wider community to address difficulties faced by older people.

This year’s UK theme is ‘Building Belonging: Celebrating the power of our social connections’.

Whether you are a local authority, charity, community group, business, care home, or local resident, you may be inspired by examples of celebrations in previous years or draw from some of the ideas below:

  • Celebrate all the ways that your community is creating opportunities for social connection.
  • Do something new that enables social connection on the day.
  • Planning and taking action to enable more social connection in the future.
