The British Standards Institution (BSI) have produced a straightforward ‘how to’ guide to help you start your business sustainability journey ‘The Little Book of Net Zero’.
You probably didn’t think much about climate change when you started your business. But climate change affects us all, and we can all play a part in combatting it. In order to address this problem, the UK has set a target to achieve ‘Net Zero’ GHG emissions by 2050. A goal that will only be achieved with the help of businesses.
‘The Little Book of Net Zero’ offers UK businesses, particularly small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the opportunity to look at the 2050 UK government's climate goal as a win-win scenario.
Making a firm committment to achieve net zero in your business will mean that you will:

- become resilient
Standards can help business through to a just transition.
They are about applying tried and tested good practice within a business to establish and maintain robust, reliable management processes. They are developed by experts who have deep understanding of the challenges small businesses face and what it will take to help you succeed. They can provide you with the tools you need to achieve your goals in the most efficient, safe, and effective way.
One standard, in particular – ISO 50005 guidelines for a phased implementation of energy management systems – aims to help SMEs make meaningful progress towards net zero. The standard is specifically designed to help small and less complex companies manage their energy performance efficiently and sustainably. This standard is free to download.
It outlines a step-by-step approach to appeal to businesses that are not intensive energy users, as well as those with limited resources, several other international standards form a toolkit that can help business on its transition to net zero.
