Meet your Relationship Manager: Carmel Gahan, award-winning Business Growth Adviser

In this series, we’re introducing you to our expert Relationship Managers. This month, meet Carmel Gahan, a highly experienced adviser who combines a strong track record in business support with a passion for helping Welsh businesses grow and succeed.

Carmel has dedicated her career to supporting entrepreneurs, from her early days as a Board member of Antur Teifi in Newcastle Emlyn to her current role on the Accelerated Growth Programme (AGP). A recipient of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Queen’s Award for Enterprise Support, she brings insight from both the private sector and public initiatives, including the Welsh Government’s Workforce Development Programme. Fluent in Welsh – a language she learned as an adult after moving from Ireland – Carmel believes deeply in the link between entrepreneurship, community sustainability and the Welsh language.

We asked Carmel to share what drives her and the advice she most often offers to growing businesses.

What first drew you to working with high-growth businesses?

I’ve always worked in business or in enterprises that empower entrepreneurs, even though I was educated to follow a more liberal arts path. Having started businesses myself and raised investment, I felt I could bring my personal experience to helping others.

I like working with high-growth companies because they are complex, even those with fewer than ten employees. They create jobs and opportunities for people to stay in their communities. I also passionately believe in the connection between entrepreneurship and the survival of the Welsh language and Wales as a nation.

What’s the most rewarding part of being a Relationship Manager at AGP?

Saving people time and worry, so they can focus on growing their business. When entrepreneurs take the help AGP offers, it can be truly transformative.

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever given or received?

The best advice I ever gave was to a successful entrepreneur: stop running his business like a start-up. He listened, scaled up his management team and set proper management structures in place. Within two years, the business grew by 50% and he sold it for several million pounds. It’s still growing under its new owners and creating more jobs.

What’s one trait you see in the most successful business leaders?

Bravery.

How do you recharge outside of work?

Inspired by a client called Corgi Socks, I’ve taught myself machine knitting and love creating pieces for family, friends and charity. I also play the fiddle in a group that focuses on traditional Welsh and Irish music. Three months ago, I started learning the harp, which I adore, and I’ll soon be joining a newly formed harp ensemble in Swansea.

What’s one thing you’d love every AGP business to know?

You don’t know it all, so take expert advice. Be open to changing yourself as well as your business.

What challenges do you most often help clients overcome?

The three main areas are:

  • Helping owners realise that letting go and trusting their teams is good for them, their business and their families.
  • Encouraging businesses to use data productively to track performance and accountability.
  • Supporting businesses to change course if things aren’t working, despite their best efforts.

Can you share a moment you’re proud of from your time at AGP?

One business had spent a lot on external consultants but struggled to put the advice into practice. I brought in three AGP coaches to collaborate on the problem, which yielded quick wins and real progress for the company. I pride myself on knowing when to bring the right people together to save time, avoid duplication, and make a difference.

And finally, what’s your go-to advice for ambitious business owners?

Be open to taking help and advice. It will save you time, money and headaches. Trust the process of support. You’ll get independent advice from people who only have your interests at heart.
