Met Office: WeatherReady

This April has been the sunniest on record in the UK since records began. Although the UK has enjoyed plenty of dry and fine weather so far this spring, there will certainly be more changeable conditions to come over the coming months. Summer can see hot and dry spells turn to heavy rain and thunderstorms, so it is important to be prepared whatever the weather.

The Met Office’s WeatherReady campaign brings together expert advice from a range of partner organisations to help people prepare for and respond to the weather, so they not only stay safe, but are able to make the most of it.

Heatwaves over recent summers are a reminder to keep ourselves, our families and neighbours safe and well in hot weather. Taking simple actions can look after our health in heat, such as wearing hats and loose-fitting clothing, and protecting our skin with sunscreen. Keeping hydrated by drinking lots of water and eating foods with high water content like ice lollies, salad and fruit is also advised.

When it comes to heavy rain, particularly when the ground is very dry and can’t absorb it, flooding and flowing water can cause damage to properties or businesses as well as making for difficult travelling conditions. It's important to keep an eye on the forecast and take action when heavy rain is forecast. This could be simply checking gutters and drains are clear or preparing a flood kit to help you cope in the event of flooding to your home and business.

A wide range of advice articles can be found on the Met Office website, with top tips and advice on flood preparedness from Natural Resources Wales.
