New plan to equip today’s children and workers with the skills needed to work in the ‘net zero’ jobs of tomorrow

Economy Minister launches new plan to ensure today’s children and workers will have the skills required to work in the new jobs of tomorrow’s net zero economy.

The Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething, today (28 February 2023) published the Welsh Government’s Stronger, Fairer, Greener Wales: Net Zero Skills Plan.

The plan recognises the importance of skills in supporting our net zero challenges, by equipping our current and future workforce with the right skills.

Launching the new plan, Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething said:

"The Net Zero Skills plan I am unveiling today is designed to ensure today’s children and workers will have the skills they’ll need to work in the jobs of tomorrow; jobs that will become the cornerstone of the new industries of the future that are either in their infancy or don’t yet exist."

Delivered through a long term vision the plan sets out how Welsh Government, businesses and industry, the education and skills sectors and trades unions will work in partnership to deliver and support this skills journey.

By collaborating the aim is to prepare Welsh citizens for future Skills as a recognised critical enabler for achieving these ambitions. Whilst ensuring that the transition is equitable and the most vulnerable members of society are not unfairly burdened with the costs of change.

The challenge to meet our net zero commitment is enormous and our future skills requirements will require a collaborative approach throughout the whole economy.  In shaping the plan, we have worked cross government, with external stakeholders and key partners to gain a picture of the net zero skills landscape against the eight emission sectors set out in Net Zero Wales. Our economy is evolving, and we will all need to change the way we work to meet the increasing skills demands.

It is widely recognised that the demand for net zero skills is increasing across Wales and we want to help and support you to grow and train your workforce.

Growing the net zero skills base in your team will help support you in reaching future markets and respond to a fast-changing economy.

To deliver the vision for a Fairer, Stronger, Greener Wales, the Net Zero Skills Action Plan will deliver 36 actions over 7 key areas priorities.

We will begin by looking at the skills landscape in a more granular depth, followed by a public consultation on the sector specific skills requirements. This will outline our current understanding of the skills situation in each sector, what skills are needed in the short, medium and long term and how to achieve this through continued collaboration. The consultation results will help to build a skills roadmap for each emission sector, which will support the development and investment of skills in the future.

"The publication of the new plan is just the start of this process. Government cannot tackle the challenge alone. A Team Wales approach is the only way we can drive forward these changes and meet our net zero commitments. Everyone needs to take responsibility and play their part in taking action to improve practices, investing in people and communities to innovate and build a more resilient economy."
