The UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) formally known as Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA has come into force on 15 July 2026.

UK and India total trade in 2025 was worth £48 billion. Businesses in both countries will benefit from improved market access, lower tariffs, streamlined customs and stronger support for digital trade, making day-to-day trade more predictable and especially beneficial for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The UK-India FTA will deliver practical benefits including:

  • lower tariffs
  • simpler customs
  • stronger digital trade commitments
  • clearer rules for businesses operating across both markets

To access preferential tariff rates, UK businesses must complete a one-time registration with HMRC through the Origin Registration portal  as soon as possible.

The Department for Business and Trade has also published a range of practical policy and sector guides to help business understand the opportunities available under the agreement, including tariffs, rules of origin, government procurement and sector-specific opportunities: Historic UK-India Free Trade Agreement is now in effect - GOV.UK.
