After an assessment of the protections available for UK personal data, the Secretary of State for the Department of Science Innovation and Technology, has made the decision to establish a UK-US data bridge allowing for the free flow of personal data between the UK and certified organisations in the US. UK individuals can also seek redress if they feel their personal data has been collected or processed unlawfully relating to US national security.
UK data bridges secure the free and safe exchange of personal data across borders. The new terminology ‘data bridge’ replaces the previously used terminology ‘adequacy decisions’.
On 21 September 2023 the statutory instrument was laid in Parliament and this came into force on 12 October 2023. From this point organisations have been able to send data to the US under the new UK Extension to the Data Privacy Framework.
