With up to 50% wage subsidy (at the National Minimum Wage) for six months, free recruitment support, and ongoing training assistance, the programme reduces the risk of getting recruitment wrong. You gain access to a pipeline of motivated 16–19-year-olds, eager to learn and contribute meaningfully to your workplace.
Flexibility is another strength. Employers can offer work tasters or unpaid work experience placements, which can later evolve into paid roles if the candidate proves suitable. This allows you to assess fit before committing to longer-term employment.

Making JGW+ work for your business
Success with JGW+ is about understanding the framework and committing to the journey. Roles must be additional, not replacements, and meet criteria such as minimum wage and 16–40 hours per week for a minimum six-month duration.
Young people eligible for JGW+ are not in full-time education, employment, or training (NEET) and have been assessed by Working Wales as suitable candidates. This ensures you're matched with individuals ready to engage with your business and develop their skills.
Your responsibilities as an employer
Participation comes with clear responsibilities. You'll provide a supportive environment, encourage skill development, and ideally retain the employee beyond the subsidised period. Programme contractors assist with recruitment, training, monitoring, and compliance, making the process smoother and more effective.
You will be required to maintain clear documentation to support the claims process. Payment is made in arrears, so you will need the ability to pay the full wage upfront in the short term.
