The Welsh Government is urging witnesses to support victims and report hate crime, as new figures reveal the continuing impact of hatred and prejudice on individuals and communities.
The call comes at the start of Hate Crime Awareness Week. Hate Crime Statistics for England and Wales 2025 to 2026, published by the Home Office on 8 October 2026, show there were 6,157 police-recorded hate crimes across Wales between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2026. Across England and Wales as a whole, hate crime increased by 7%.
Hate crime is a criminal offence motivated by hostility or prejudice based on race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity.
Victims and witnesses can report incidents directly to the police. Free and confidential support, independent from the police, is also available through the Welsh Government-funded Wales Hate Support Centre, delivered by Victim Support.
