Closing the support gap: How the Accelerated Growth Programme helped AIMAITES bring personalised tutoring to every student

AIMAITES case study founder

AIMAITES, an edtech platform making education more accessible, began with a personal transformation. Founder Sion Brown was predicted a D grade in GCSE and A-Level Maths, but with additional private tutoring, achieved an A* in both. That experience sparked a mission: to use AI to give every student access to personalised support while reducing educators' workload.

Today, the Cwmbran-based business operates three platforms: AI-powered personalised learning for students, workflow tools for tutors and resources to help schools reduce marking workloads.

Support from the Business Wales Accelerated Growth Programme (AGP) has helped Sion refine his strategy, strengthen operations and prepare for growth. Here, he shares his experience of building a purpose-driven tech business.

What inspired you to start AIMAITES?

My own exam experience showed me the power of personalised support. Students struggle because they lack it, and teachers struggle because they lack capacity. AIMAITES harnesses AI to help teachers reduce their workload and give every student access to the tailored support that unlocks their full potential.

What problem do you solve?

Our platforms use AI to reduce teachers' workloads while delivering personalised, interactive learning directly to students. We make education more inclusive, efficient and engaging. We want to see a world where every student, regardless of their financial or other background, has access to high-quality, tailored education. We believe personalised learning, delivered in a fun and interactive way, is the key to achieving that.

How has AGP supported you?

With AGP's support, we've been able to navigate the challenges of scaling a multi-product, AI-driven business with confidence. Structured guidance from our Relationship Manager and specialist advisers strengthened our strategic planning, refined our growth roadmap and helped us develop clearer operational systems. AGP connected us with expertise in sustainability, HR and legal, areas difficult for young tech companies to resource internally. The programme's workshops and leadership development opportunities broadened our thinking about scaling and building a strong team.

What AGP support has made the biggest difference?

Strategic planning helped us clarify our growth trajectory and prioritise the systems needed to scale with confidence. An expert carbon footprint assessment enabled us to optimise our platform, achieving roughly a 75% reduction in compute time and an estimated 70-80% reduction in related emissions. HR guidance clarified future recruitment plans, and legal expertise helped us navigate contracts, safeguarding and IP considerations. Together, these measures gave us far greater clarity.

Have you made any significant strategic changes while working with AGP?

The most impactful change has been moving away from launching too many major features at once. Before joining AGP, we pushed multiple large initiatives simultaneously, which diluted focus and slowed progress. With AGP's support, we prioritised smaller, high-impact elements delivered in phases, enabling us to iterate quickly, validate with users and build stronger foundations. This has made our roadmap more realistic and far easier to execute.

What milestones are you most proud of?

Becoming a supplier to Adnodd, the Welsh Government's arm's-length body for bilingual educational resources, following a successful competitive tender process, is a major milestone, building on earlier work with Adnodd on AIRepresent.me, which teaches students about algorithmic bias and equity.

We've since been commissioned to develop anti-bullying resources for 2027. This year, we also reached the final four of the UKRI and Innovate UK Agentic AI Pioneers Prize, which is open to companies and universities of any size competing for up to £500k, and were finalists in the DfE's Tutoring Tools Pioneers Programme. Alongside exhibiting at Wales Tech Week and winning Highly Commended for Innovation & Technology at the Torfaen, Monmouthshire & Blaenau Gwent Business Awards, we're proud to have launched systems that reduce workload while improving outcomes.

What's next for AIMAITES?

We're rolling out a new version of AITutoring with a range of pioneering features, and we'll be running pilots with multi-academy trusts in England and schools in Wales to make personalised education more accessible and inclusive. Reaching two national finals has given us fresh validation as we expand our footprint across the UK.

What advice would you give other entrepreneurs?

Start smaller, release earlier, and let feedback guide you. The number one predictor of success isn't talent; it's grit: the ability to persevere through setbacks. Be proactive with AGP support; engage actively, be specific about your challenges, and treat it as a partnership. The clearer you articulate your goals, the more valuable the support becomes.
