Pontypool-based Freight Logistics Solutions is using smart technology to drive down carbon emissions in road freight across Wales and beyond. With support from the Welsh Government’s Innovation team, the company has developed Emissions Manager - a software tool that helps manufacturers track and reduce their carbon footprint through more efficient transport planning.
Founded in 2016, the company has grown into one of the UK’s leading digital freight providers, working with more than 16,000 hauliers across the UK and Europe. Its technology connects clients with nearby transport providers, using real-time data to optimise routes and minimise waste - helping reduce emissions and lower costs.
Ieuan Rosser, Founder and CEO of Freight Logistics Solutions, said: “Our platform finds the right vehicle, in the right place, at the right time. By cutting down on unnecessary journeys, we’re helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint. Emissions Manager takes that further - giving clients clear, accredited data they can use to report savings and drive sustainable decisions.”
The company received its first SMART Flexible Innovation Support (SFIS) funding in February 2024. The £200,000 grant enabled it to develop and launch Emissions Manager - a carbon measurement and reporting platform designed to help clients meet sustainability targets. Over the last year, this support allowed the company to:
- Build a dedicated in-house innovation team to accelerate product development.
- Integrate real-time DVLA data to produce vehicle-specific emissions outputs.
- Achieve key industry accreditation for its emissions reporting.
- Launch customer-facing dashboards providing automated carbon data and savings summaries.
Ieuan added: “We had the scale, the supply chain and the technology, but the Welsh Government’s SFIS support helped us bring it all together to develop a tool that’s already helping clients reduce emissions, win tenders and meet their sustainability goals.”
The impact of the company’s innovation has been clear:
- Over 600,000kg of CO₂ emissions saved - equivalent to 3.3 million miles of freight movement.
- A new £1.5 million client contract secured, where sustainability was a decisive factor.
- Turnover has grown from £11 million to £17.5 million in two years, with a forecast of £25-30 million in 2025/26.
- The team has grown to 46 employees, supporting skilled jobs in Wales.
- A new EU base launched in Lithuania to serve clients across Europe.
The company’s achievements have been recognised with national awards and international recognition for its data-led approach. Emissions Manager was a finalist for Best Green Tech Application at the 2024 Wales Tech Awards and the company was invited by the Smart Freight Centre to present at its global members’ gathering. Freight Logistics Solutions also became the first UK company to integrate DVLA vehicle data to calculate real-time emissions.
The company is now focused on the next stage of development, including tools that let clients select alternative fuel or electric vehicles as part of their freight planning. This will support even greater emissions reductions, aligned with the Welsh Government’s climate goals.
Freight Logistics Solutions’ work supports the Welsh Government’s Innovation Strategy across multiple areas. It contributes to the economy by creating skilled tech jobs in Wales, securing international contracts and scaling exports. It supports climate and nature by helping manufacturers reduce freight-related emissions and make informed, sustainable choices. And by building an in-house innovation team and leading on data-driven development, it also supports the education mission - developing digital skills and innovation capacity within the sector.
