Thanks to innovation support and funding, global advanced materials company Haydale plan to propel its research and development efforts forward to advance its ground-breaking graphene-based heating solutions.
Established in 2003, Haydale is a leading advanced materials solutions company that specialises in the design, development, and commercialisation of materials in particular graphene.
About the company
The Ammanford-based company’s patented proprietary plasma process enables the functionalisation and dispersion of nanomaterials, including graphene, into a range of commercial products.
Used in a variety of industries, including aerospace, automotive, construction, energy, and electronics, its innovative solutions are designed to enhance the performance of a wide range of products, including composites, plastics, elastomers, coatings, and inks. By incorporating graphene and other nanomaterials into these products, it improves their strength, durability, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and other properties.
Why they wanted SMART FIS support
To further enhance its commitment to revolutionising many industries making them more efficient and environmentally friendly, the company has been on a mission to commercialise its BioSensor inks and expand its offering within the energy, housing and retail sectors.
Its BioSensor inks can be used within household underfloor heating systems, having a real impact on targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions and decarbonise the UK and Europe.
Recognising that its support would be an investment in not only Haydale’s future, but also a contribution to creating a more sustainable planet, Welsh Government agreed funding of £182,000 over a two-year period to accelerate the development of its prototype graphene material technology towards a market-ready product that can be tested in a home environment.
What SMART FIS support did for Haydale
The funding has propelled the company’s research and development efforts forward, allowing it to make remarkable strides in advancing its groundbreaking graphene-based heating solutions.
Through enhanced testing capabilities, Haydale has been able to conduct more extensive and rigorous experiments, which have led to crucial insights and refinements its technology. It has also allowed the team to explore novel applications and possibilities for its technology which will elevate the efficiency, durability, and overall performance of its underfloor heating technology, positioning them at the forefront of innovation in the heating solutions sector.
Allocated funds have also been set aside for upscaling its production capabilities and facilitating strategic collaborations, so the company are poised to meet growing market demands, strengthening its position as a key player in the rapidly evolving field of sustainable and energy-efficient heating technologies.
As a young, growing and innovative company, the support received from Welsh Government has helped Haydale develop an Innovation Funnel that drives the most promising developments to market faster and more efficiently.
Mark Bolt, Group Sales and Marketing Manager at Haydale, said:
The funding from Welsh Government has been a game-changer for us. It has catalysed our growth, research and collaborative capabilities allowing us to not only revolutionise underfloor heating, but also contribute to the broader landscape of sustainable and efficient energy solutions.
The nature of our technology and product development process can be variable at times, so we’ve been grateful that the flexibility of the programme gave us room to alter the parameters when required.
