"The Accelerated Growth Programme’s support has been crucial in helping us overcome challenges and giving us the structure we needed to scale confidently."

Snowdon Timber, which began as a small timber yard in Mochdre, North Wales, has transformed into one of the UK's leading digital timber suppliers. Entrepreneur Jody Goode founded the company in 2019, after spotting an opportunity to modernise how timber is sold across the UK. Today, the company serves the national DIY market through over 10 major e-commerce platforms, including B&Q Marketplace, Amazon and Tesco, achieving year-on-year double-digit growth and recently winning the B&Q Growth Tool Champion Award. The team has grown from 9 to 21 employees in the last year, with further expansion planned. We caught up with Jody Goode to find out how the Business Wales Accelerated Growth Programme (AGP) helped Snowdon Timber build the infrastructure to scale sustainably.

What inspired you to start Snowdon Timber?

After spending a decade trading timber internationally, I saw an opportunity to modernise how timber is sold in the UK. Customers no longer need to visit a yard to buy timber. Our online model allows homeowners, tradespeople, and small builders to easily view, compare, and order products from anywhere in the country. I started with a small yard in Mochdre in 2019, and we've since grown into a leading national e-commerce supplier. We aim to be the UK's most efficient, digitally-led timber supplier.

What were your biggest challenges during growth?

Scaling quickly while maintaining efficiency was one of our biggest hurdles. Managing higher order volumes, expanding across multiple marketplaces, and maintaining consistent service required better systems and structure. We experienced annual doubling of turnover for three consecutive years, which created logistical challenges that our existing processes couldn't handle. We needed to professionalise our operations to support sustainable growth.

How did AGP help you overcome these challenges?

Support from AGP has been transformative. They helped us implement improved financial controls, HR frameworks, and workflow processes that have stabilised our operations and improved overall performance. Their support strengthened our financial management, recruitment strategies, and internal policies, giving us the structure needed to scale confidently. They also encouraged us to focus on long-term sustainability through initiatives such as ongoing training via webinars, which has kept our team developing alongside the business.

What specific AGP support made the biggest difference?

The combination of financial planning guidance, diversification advice, and HR assistance has had a direct impact on our efficiency, resilience, and long-term strategy. AGP helped us strengthen our people management and internal processes, ensuring greater clarity and consistency across the business. This support has been essential as we've more than doubled our team size in 12 months, creating around 10 new jobs since working with AGP.

What milestones are you most proud of?

Expanding from B&Q to over 10 marketplaces across the UK stands out. Being listed on B&Q Marketplace opened doors to Amazon, eBay, Tesco and others. We recently won the B&Q Growth Tool Champion Award in recognition of our innovation and performance, which was a proud moment for the whole team. We've also diversified beyond our core rough-sawn timber and decking into garden décor, including bird boxes and planters and homeware products like wooden storage crates. This expansion has increased sales volumes and reduced our reliance on the DIY market alone, providing greater stability.

Have you introduced new ways of working?

Yes, through our work with AGP, we've introduced new internal processes and systems that have improved efficiency and management across the business. We've implemented smarter systems that make day-to-day operations more efficient and scalable. Innovation has been key to our growth, and AGP's support helped us streamline workflows and avoid the operational pressures that come with rapid expansion. We're also developing a carbon reduction plan with AGP's support, reviewing materials, packaging, and energy use to set clear environmental targets.

Our focus remains on balancing consistency in quality and service with a willingness to innovate, ensuring we can continue serving customers nationwide while building an even stronger foundation for the future.

What advice would you give other entrepreneurs?

  • Invest in strong processes, clear policies, and efficient workflows from the start to support sustainable growth.
  • Never stand still; growth comes from consistently looking for the next opportunity.
  • Every challenge is an opportunity to learn and adapt. Stay resilient, focus on the long-term goal, and be willing to adjust your approach.

For AGP clients specifically: be open and proactive. Share your challenges, ask questions, and make the most of the expertise AGP offers.
