BOSS Frequently Asked Questions

BOSS stands for the Business Online Support Service. The BOSS service is provided by Business Wales.

The service provides online learning courses to help people who are:

  • thinking about, or actually, starting a business
  • already running a business
  • looking to grow their business

To join BOSS all a person needs is access to a computer with a current browser and an internet connection. Course materials include interactive guides, videos, downloadables and quizzes.

To do BOSS courses you need to have a learning account.

Registering for a learning account only takes a couple of minutes. You need to:

  • create a user name and password
  • enter a few details
  • accept terms and conditions
  • you will then receive an e-mail containing a link which you should click to access BOSS
  • once in BOSS, if you are a new prospective or actual business, have a message to complete an "About your business" registration form. This will only take a couple of minutes.
  1. Why can't I see the course content? (Pop-Up Blocker

    When you click to enter a BOSS course for the first time you may get a message stating 'Pop-Up Blocked'. A pop up blocker is software that prevents pop-up windows from appearing on a website. To find out how to turn your pop-up blocker off click here.

  2. How do I close a window?

    Each time you complete a module you will be instructed to close the window. You can do this simply by clicking on the cross (x) at the top the window. Should you decide to exit a module early your progress will automatically be saved.

  3. What is an Open Badge?

    An Open Badge is an online representation of knowledge and skills you've acquired.

    Open Badges enable you to tell people what you've learned and achieved on BOSS. You can display your BOSS Open Badges on your social networking profiles (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Linked In) websites and more. Each BOSS Open Badge has data built in that links back to the Welsh Government verifying your achievement.

  4. What is a 'backpack'?

    Individuals can earn badges from multiple sources, both online and offline. You can manage and share them using the Open Badges backpack. Right now Mozilla Backpack is the industry standard for open badge sharing.

  1. Are people outside Wales eligible to do the courses?

    No. If you work for an organisation based in Wales, live in Wales or are looking to start a business in Wales you are eligible to do BOSS courses.

  2. Can I do the courses if I haven't started my business yet?

    You can do a BOSS course if you are thinking of starting a business or if you are already in business.

  3. Can anyone employed by me do the training?

    Yes. Anyone employed by a business in Wales can do BOSS courses.

  4. I don't have broadband, can I still do the training?

    In order to complete the online training you will need to have access to an internet connection. The training can be completed anywhere that has an internet connection e.g. library, local café with Wi-Fi connection, friend or family member's house.

  1. What is a BOSS course?

    A BOSS course is a suite of learning modules covering a specific area in business. There are 16 BOSS courses currently available. Courses are grouped under the following categories:

    • Start Up and Business Planning
    • Finance
    • Marketing
    • Business Ideas and Innovation

    Each course will take approximately 3.5 hours to complete.

  2. What is a course module?

    Each BOSS course is made up of a set of modules. Modules need to be completed in the order they are presented. Completed modules have a Tick against them. The next module will then become available. Remaining modules can only be accessed after the previous modules have been completed.

  3. What is a downloadable?

    BOSS courses include various downloadable resources. For example, the Taking the Plunge course includes a Business Skills Action Plan. Downloadables are available as WORD documents which can be saved and edited on you device or as PDF documents which can be printed.

  4. What is a test?

    At the end of each course you can complete a test to assess your knowledge. Each test contains a number of multiple choice questions. The pass mark for each test is 80%. If you don't pass the first time, you'll have the opportunity to immediately retake the test. When you pass the test you will receive a record of your achievement and open badge.
