Disability History Month is a chance to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace and challenge the stereotypes and barriers that can exclude disabled people from work and society.
This year, Disability History Month runs from 14 November to 20 December and focuses on livelihood and employment.
Throughout Disability History Month we want to raise awareness about the benefits of employing disabled people and highlight the support and resources available employers.
Recruiting disabled people can lead to a variety of organisational benefits:
- Access to a wider recruitment and talent pool.
- Reflect the diverse range of customers served, and the community in which the organisation is based.
- Fewer sick days. Many independent studies agree that on average disabled workers take fewer sick days than non-disabled employees (UN 2007).
- Improved corporate reputation.
Supporting employees who may acquire an impairment is not only the right thing to do but has more benefits, including financial benefits, than recruiting and training new staff.
