Self Assessment is a system HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) uses to collect Income Tax.

Tax is usually deducted automatically from wages and pensions. People and businesses with other income (including COVID-19 grants and support payments) must report it in a tax return.

The deadline for customers to file their tax return online and pay any tax owed for the 2022 to 2023 tax year is 31 January 2024. For further information please select the following link: Pay your Self Assessment tax bill: Overview - GOV.UK

If customers think they no longer need to complete a Self Assessment tax return for the 2022 to 2023 tax year, they should tell HMRC before the deadline on 31 January 2024 to avoid any penalties or needing to complete a tax return.

Contact HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) as soon as possible if you:

  • have missed a tax deadline
  • know you will not be able to pay a tax bill on time
