Success stories

Hendrewen Hotel

Martin Roberts outside the Hendrewen Hotel

I'm an ideas person. A 'plant'. A motivator. A visionary. A serial entrepreneur. A TV property expert. What I needed was an advisory team who could turn my ideas and that vision into a viable business opportunity. To know the red tape and hurdles. To help share my incredible business opportunity in a language that the business world would understand. And to spot potential operational, HR, legal and procedural issues before they bite me. We are only part of the way through our working relationship with Phil and his team at Business Wales, but I already feel so protected, supported and empowered having them working alongside me. The project stands a massively increased chance of being the success I hope for, as a direct result of their involvement.

Highly motivated entrepreneur and Homes Under the Hammer presenter Martin Roberts has purchased the derelict Hendrewen Hotel in the Rhondda Valley, hoping to transform the hotel into a fun gastro pub, restaurant and tourist attraction, with characterful luxury accommodation.

To turn his ambitious vision into a viable business, Martin came to Business Wales for support to ensure compliance with HR legalities and any operational and procedural issues.

His business advisor is providing pre-start support with legal status, HR, and sustainability ambitions. He has also been helped through the grant application process with several different organisations.

Martin will support the local community throughout the transformation process and has recently engaged with Realskillz. This initiative supports young people aged 15 to 18 who may be struggling with the traditional education system to gain invaluable construction industry qualifications at an early age.
