Counterfeit goods are goods made in imitation so they can be passed off fraudulently or deceptively as genuine. Though most people see the purchase of fake or ‘knock off’ goods as a victimless crime, there is always an impact.
Impact
Due to counterfeit goods being of a poorer quality to the real thing, when the products fail, businesses reputation can be damaged. It also impacts on revenue streams for businesses. Businesses will simply not see any revenue for the sale of counterfeit goods.
Prevention
Brand owners should register trademarks in jurisdictions where you sell your product and also in jurisdictions where products are manufactured. Trademark owners also need to be vigilant and monitor online websites that are engaged with the sale of counterfeit products.
