The definition of threatening behaviour is intentional behaviour that would cause a person of ordinary sensibilities fear of injury or harm.
Impact
Threatening behaviour in the workplace can really affect staff confidence. If there are people loitering outside a place of work, threatening staff and customers, people will not want to visit your business and it would make it difficult to attract new business if this is an existing problem. Employees could also be guilty of threatening behaviour. Whether it’s bullying fellow staff members or threatening customers.
Prevention
If people are loitering outside your premises, threatening staff, take a zero tolerance to them. Call the police as soon as possible and get them removed. If customers are threatening staff inside the premises, ban them and ensure that the banning order is followed through. If employees are abusing fellow employees, investigate the problem immediately and ensure that that staff member is swiftly and strongly dealt with.
Report it
Call your local Police on 101. However, in an emergency always use 999. 101 is the number to call if, for example:
- A vehicle has been stolen
- Property has been damaged
- You’re giving information about other crime
The number can be used to report a non-emergency to any Police Force in Wales. Calls to 101 from landlines and mobile networks cost 15p per call, no matter what time of day you call or how long you are on the phone.
In an emergency, always dial 999. This is when immediate action is required, such as:
- A crime is in progress
- Someone suspected of a crime is near by
- Someone’s life is at risk
- Someone is injured
