Learning activities
Use a PowerPoint presentation to show people doing different types of jobs.
For each image, ask the pupils to identify the job, discuss where the person works and where applicable, the service that is being provided. This is a good opportunity to challenge gender stereotyping and promote gender equality.
Explain that many of these people work for someone i.e. they are employed. Ask the pupils
- What are some of the good things of being employed?
Introduce the concept of being 'self-employed'. Ask the pupils
- What are some of the good things of being self-employed?
Invite familiar people into the classroom e.g. school liaison police officer, school nurse, firefighter for pupils to ask questions about the visitor's job.
If possible, visit the local area for pupils to observe and record people doing different jobs.
Make a simple plan of their local area to show where people work and the types of jobs they do or the service they provide.
Ask the pupils which of these jobs they would like to do and why?
