In my business career the people who inspired me were the ones who started with nothing and built large businesses because they were built on a number of factors – each being different but each requiring salespeople with sales skills. I think the prime example of sales skills was the way Bill Gates won the contract to supply IBM with the first operating for personal computers that set Microsoft on its journey to where it is today. It was not the best system available, but he was the best salesman. I can explain further if anyone wants to know.
The best thing about being your own boss is that you can set your own targets and react quickly to situations. A sense of achievement when things go well.
The last major problem that I was faced with was starting a business employing 2 people, with major overheads with nothing to sell. I was a residential letting agent opening a new franchised office of a major letting chain agency. I had to go out and find landlords and sell them that the service I offered was better that they were already receiving. I built the business up over 10 years and sold it successfully after 10 years.
