Creating my own business was always something I had aspired to achieve and when I was raising our young family, I had the opportunity to turn this into a reality; and start a business from scratch. I wanted to work in the legal field from a convenient location in rural Wales.
By now Agri Advisor has nine offices and a team of over fifty individuals, the majority of whom come from rural backgrounds.
As a business we are a legal company specialising in advising farm businesses and those people who live in our rural communities. Our clients come from all over Britain, and we offer advice on numerous different fields, from succession planning and wills, to buying and selling assets and handling disputes of all kinds.
We also offer our services in Welsh which is particularly important to me, team members, and clients.
My enterprising spirit comes from my parents, as they showed me the importance of focus and a hard-working ethos and the opportunities which spring from that to realise ambitions. I had the confidence to take the big step of starting the business after receiving specialist advice on setting up a business.
If I had to list all the problems which can arise in the business world, it would be an endless list; but I look at them in a positive way and look to learn something from every challenge. Problem solving becomes a big part of running of a business, luckily for me this is also a skill often used as a solicitor. I love making decisions about the direction and aim of the business; again, by creating an ethos of close collaboration as a team within the business.
Continual development of a business will always ensure you stay ahead of competitors and hopefully ensures return clients, looking for new opportunities from your business offering.
My advice would be to spend a fair time thoroughly researching your business idea. Speak to others who have done something similar. Think not just about how to start the business but also how you will ultimately wind it up. Also be open to working with others who show different strengths than you as they can strengthen your team and your business – know your strengths and weaknesses and how to address those gaps. Be ready to change your plans and put everything you can to the business to ensure success.
Follow your dreams to achieve your goals.
