When Mark Williams lost his left leg in a road traffic accident at just 10 years old, his life changed overnight. But what could have defined his future instead became the foundation of it. Determined not to be limited by his circumstances, Mark channelled his energy into sport, going on to become a Paralympic swimmer, winning silver and bronze medals at the 1988 Seoul Games and later becoming a world champion and record holder.
That same resilience carried into his career. Over 25 years, Mark built an impressive track record in business, helping to grow Ecolab’s Agriculture Division into a multi-million-dollar market leader across the UK and Ireland. Yet his most impactful venture would come from something far more personal - and unexpected.
In 2017, a simple moment in a supermarket car park changed everything. A young child noticed Mark’s prosthetic leg cover and excitedly asked his mum for one. For Mark, it was a lightbulb moment. What if prosthetics could be more than functional? What if they could inspire confidence, individuality, even pride?
From that idea, Limb-art was born.
What started as a solution to a personal problem quickly evolved into a global business with a powerful purpose: helping amputees feel confident and expressive. Limb Art designs stylish prosthetic leg covers that restore natural shape under clothing while allowing wearers to showcase their personality. Today, the company operates in over 15 countries, has a strong international following, and has received recognition from leading figures including Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou - who named Mark Disabled Entrepreneur of the Year - and HRH Prince William, who personally wished the venture well.
Yet for Mark, success isn’t measured by awards or growth alone - it’s about impact. He recalls one deeply moving moment with a former soldier who had lost his leg and several friends in service. Limb Art recreated a memorial tattoo of his fallen colleagues onto a prosthetic cover. When the man fitted it, he quietly said, “My mates are back.” It’s moments like that which define the true value of the business.
Mark believes his journey has been shaped by a few key principles. First, the ability to connect with people - whether in the boardroom or on the frontline - has opened doors and built trust. Second, confidence is essential: belief in yourself, your idea, and your product is non-negotiable. And third, staying grounded in the numbers is crucial. As Mark puts it, “Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity.”
Despite facing life-changing adversity from an early age, Mark has continually adapted, learned, and grown - often with the support and advice of others. Now, after building a successful global brand and being recognised with an OBE in 2026 and a King’s Award for Enterprise in 2024, he is focused on giving back.
He is passionate about sharing what he’s learned with the next generation, showing that great ideas often come from real-life challenges. His story is proof that with resilience, belief, and a clear understanding of your purpose, it’s possible to turn even the toughest experiences into something that changes lives - not just your own, but others’ too.
