When Jack Cain noticed a gap in the market in the predominantly Welsh-speaking Bangor area, he launched Cain Auto Detailing, to offer a bilingual mobile service across the region.
Jack has always had the drive to become an entrepreneur and, thanks to business support from Big Ideas Wales, the first language Welsh speaker, has found that much of his business is conducted through his mother tongue.
“Welsh is widely spoken in Bangor and clients are proud to converse in Welsh,” says Jack. “It came naturally to me to launch a Welsh language business, to offer customers what they want and are most comfortable with.”
Jack was referred to Business Wales by Llwyddo’n Lleol 2050 (Succeeding Locally 2025), an employment guidance scheme, which consolidated the customer services skills he has honed through his full time employment at Caernarfon Council.
“Lots of my clients prefer to converse and make arrangements in Welsh, which is fine by me,” says Jack, who is available for evening or weekend cleans and regularly posts updated availability on his busy social media accounts. “Offering a bilingual service can help put customers at ease and builds trust.”
He said: “Growing up, I was always cleaning my parents’ car and would enjoy getting a car spotless. I decided to turn that hobby into a sideline and have worked on 40 vehicles since kicking off in January.”
Twenty-year-old Jack has worked with Young Person’s Start Up Business Adviser Caryl George, to refine his finance plans. Caryl supported him through the application process for a Young Person’s Start Up Grant and guided him on advertising Cain Auto Detailing as a new and sustainable business.
She also guided him through obtaining the relevant business insurances and registering with HMRC.
Caryl George said: “Jack is full of energy and has built a lively social media presence. He has already built up a loyal following for his cleans and we wish him well as it grows and expands into other geographical areas.”
Jack operates from his own car, using sustainable products where possible and minimising waste. “Big Ideas Wales support helped me invest in a pressure washer, hoover, steamer and other cleaning equipment,” he says. “These can be quite costly but help me clean quicker. They helped me push beyond my comfort zone and put myself out there. I would love to do this full time eventually.”
Jack is planning promoting winter cleans to combat the effect of icy and cold weather on vehicle bodywork and will be paying particular attention to screenwash and tyre checks.
