The cattle enterprise review at Graianfryn is underway, with data collection and preliminary analysis completed. Key developments include:

  • Data Collection (May-June): Comprehensive data on financial records, production figures, and animal health metrics were gathered to form the basis for analysis and recommendations.
  • Preliminary Analysis (July): Potential areas of inefficiency impacting profitability were identified and shared with the farmer for early discussions on improvement strategies. The key performance indicators have been benchmarked with FBS industry averages to identify the shortfalls.

Next steps?

Efforts are focused on evaluating options for enhancing cattle performance, including:

  • Management practices
  • Technological solutions
  • Breed selection
  • Genetic considerations
  • A cost-effectiveness analysis is also underway to assess the advantages and disadvantages of rearing calves on-farm versus purchasing them.
