To ensure a robust evaluation, the project was repeated with a second batch of calves in July 2024. Data collection for this second batch is currently ongoing, allowing for a comprehensive comparison between the two groups and the identification of any trends or consistent outcomes.
Next steps?
As the second batch of calves approaches weaning, data gathering and analysis will begin, which will include a complete assessment of all obtained data, such as calf health records, growth rates, and environmental characteristics.By comparing the performance of the two calf batches and assessing the incidence of respiratory disease and antibiotic use, we aim to quantify the impact of the new housing system on animal welfare and overall productivity.
The findings of this analysis will be instrumental in informing potential refinements to the calf rearing system and guiding future management decisions at Graianfryn.
