'It may feel as though once you've harvested your crop it's job done, but post-harvest and storage management is every bit as important as in the growing stages. Getting your crop to market in the best possible condition, and reducing waste at this stage is often the difference between profit and loss on the crop you've invested so much in already.

 

In this session we'll cover everything between the moment you harvest through to purchase.  Learning points will include:

  • Harvesting at the right time
  • Minimising damage at harvest
  • Slowing down post-harvest degradation
  • Garding and minimising storage problems
  •  Storage systems and methods
  • Building your own low-cost storage facilities

 

Speakers

 

Tony Little has been supporting organic and agroecological growers in Wales for over 20 years. During that time, he has: supported farmers through organic conversion; coordinated knowledge exchange programmes; and managed farmer led research projects; and helped develop short supply chain and local food systems. His practical farming and growing experience include market gardening and seed potato production.

 

Adam York runs Glebelands Organic Market Garden with his partner Lesley Bryson. Prior to moving to Wales, he set up a pioneering, suburban market-garden model in Manchester and ran it highly successfully from 2001 to 2009. He was one of group of 4 people that set up Unicorn Grocery Ltd in Manchester in 1996.  Today, it remains one of the largest independent retailers of organic foodstuffs in the UK, offering organic, locally sourced fruit and vegetables and fair-trade deli products. In a career spanning 3 decades, Adam vast experience in growing, storing and retailing a wide variety of crops

 

Lyndall Merry runs Bryn Celyn Veg, a small seasonal market garden in the Brecon Beacons about to take on its 5th season.

Our main sales outlet is farmers markets and we only sell our own produce, so efficiency and detail are vital to generating profit.  Post harvest washing and storage is a key part of ensuring top quality and freshness in our produce, so that our customers are consistently satisfied and keep returning for more.

Lyndall will give a tour of the gardens and a closer look at our harvest and post-harvest methods, root washing, leaf washing and drying, cold storage and how and when to avoid washing and extra work wherever possible. Having started on the cheap we have been constantly re investing and building up our infrastructure, we will also share some of the harder lessons and why we keep spending more money to improve efficiency.
