Focus Site Project: Converting a set stocking beef and sheep unit to a rotational grazing system

Project aims:

  • To demonstrate the process of converting a set stocking beef and sheep farm to a rotational grazing system and the associated benefits.
  • The project will highlight all the practical considerations of dividing the farm up and installing all relevant infrastructure and provide a blue print to such conversions.
  • Despite the potential of rotational grazing to improve grass utilisation, growth and quality, such systems are an exception rather than the norm on beef and sheep farms. The project will address the challenge of feed budgeting for sheep and cattle and offer practical solutions for mixed systems.
  • The cost per hectare of setting up the system will be recorded, along with daily liveweight gains of lambs. Historical performance recording data will be used to evaluate what impact converting from set stocking to rotational grazing has on animal performance.
  • Grass growth and quality will be monitored throughout the project and the return on investment will be assessed.
