Focus Site Project: Future proofing a beef unit- Embracing technology to improve target specification success

Project aims:

  • This project will embrace the principles of ‘Measure to Manage’, to enable the farmer to make decisions based on daily live weight gain (DLWG) of the cattle and to consider what interventions are needed to improve efficiency on the unit reducing days to slaughter.
  • Geraint Evans, wants to improve the efficiency of finishing cattle at Penrallt Farm.  Input from the farm’s vet and nutritionist will establish where improvements can be made to the herd’s health and nutrition.
  • Technology providers will seek to improve data collection and interpretation to assist in herd health monitoring.
  • The end goal for Geraint is to be able to make factual decisions for the enterprise based on a sound knowledge of his cattle weights and costs.  This in turn will enable him to reduce his time to finish the cattle whilst still hitting the required specification from the processor.
