Bremenda Isaf, Llanarthne, South Carmarthenshire

Bremenda Isaf is a 100 acre county farm in Llanarthne,Carmarthenshire, recently acquired by Bwyd Sir Gar Food partnership, for an innovative food system development project. The partnership, led by Carmarthenshire County Council, aims to demonstrate diversification into field-scale food production using climate friendly, low carbon methods to minimise environmental impact and increase resilience and biodiversity.

Bremenda Isaf will trial field-scale legume-cereal intercropping techniques with a focus on production of food for human consumption.

The project aims to:

  • Identify and demonstrate the production of legume and wheat varieties suitable for cultivation in Carmarthenshire, which, in addition are suitable for human consumption
  • Demonstrate a cereal-legume intercropping method
  • Explore cultivation, harvesting and processing methods for chosen crops
  • Identify a supply chain for the crop, including public, private and community sectors

The farm intends to work with the Carmarthenshire County Council school catering team through an already established two-year menu redesign around increasing seasonal, local and sustainable ingredients. The farm and catering team will explore the viability of incorporating different legumes into meals, as locally and sustainably grown plant protein sources.

The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:

  • Resilient ecosystems
  • Resource efficient
