Getting started with regenerative farming - A How to Guide

Cwmrisca farm is a 700-acre upland farm located in Tonddu, near Bridgend. Jacob Anthony, a fifth-generation farmer, works alongside his parents, Peter and Emma. Their family have been farming at Cwmrisca since 1926. The farm is stocked with 1000 Lleyn x Texel ewes and 100 Welsh Black x Charolais/Limousin suckler cows. The land rises from 450ft to 850ft.

The Anthonys have diversified their operations to include dog freedom fields, an equine forage, and a contracting business, in addition to renewable energy sources, including an 11kW farm turbine and a 60kW log biomass boiler.

Peter and Jacob are particularly interested in further exploring farming practices from a regenerative approach.

Through working with Cwmrisca Farm we will investigate the options for outwintering cattle, which will involve looking into different crop options and grazing management strategies. The grazing management of the sheep at Cwmrisca will also be taken into consideration.

The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:

  • Maximising resource efficiency
  • Mitigating flood and drought risks
  • Maintaining and enhancing the resilience of ecosystems
  • Reducing emissions of greenhouse gases
  • Maximising carbon sequestration & storage
  • High animal health & welfare
